Having worked alongside the establishment of St Lucia's first kiteboarding center - we have definitive information on the status of kiteboarding on the island, and you can find information about the latest developments here. The following items  are just a couple of things that are worth knowing to be certain of enjoying your holiday to the fullest.

Airport
The best kiteboarding locations at the south of the island fall within the 5 mile 'controlled airspace' of the international airport. Kiteboarding areas are zoned (see location descriptions) and because of international regulations, it is important that kiteboarders keep to the designated areas. The airport control tower is in direct contact with The Reef Kite + Surf center should there be any unforeseen requirement for kiteboarders to leave the water (so far this has never happened) and there is also a general requirement that kites should not be flown at times of low visibility - heavy rainfall, dusk etc.

Weather
An up-to-date weather forecast is always posted on the noticeboard at The Reef Kite + Surf center. You can read this, or check with the center staff so that you are aware of the weather conditions before starting your session on the water. You should also keep an eye out for occasional dark clouds on the eastern horizon. These generally signal short periods of rain accompanied by a fairly rapid increase in wind strength. This may last no more than 2-3 minutes, but depending on your ability you might want to sit it out. Whatever the case, as long as you are aware of this phenomenon and know to look out for it, you'll have plenty of time to decide what to do.

Rent-a-radio
A number of waterproof 2-way radios are available for rent at The Reef Kite + Surf center. These can conveniently be worn with an armband, and provide a means of contacting the center in an emergency. They are primarily available to students who have recently completed a course at The Reef Kite + Surf centre  and are going out on their first unsupervised sessions.  Alternatively, you can rent a couple of radios and stay in touch with friends/family on the beach.
**Radios are not a substitute for mastering self-rescue techniques.
